Notice to Visitors to the Mills Archive

As custodians of valuable and vulnerable records, the Trustees must require all visitors to abide by our Regulations to preserve our collection.

You must:

  • Complete and sign the Visitors Book each time you come
  • Leave your coat and bags in the wardrobe provided and not take them to your study place
  • Write with pencil only on the yellow paper provided

You must not:

  • Smoke nor consume food or drink in Library
  • Remove any documents, books or other material
  • Write on or trace directly from any records
  • Make copies of any material without written permission

Viewing material

  • To visit the Library and Research Room you need to make an appointment.
  • On your first visit you must
    • Provide written proof of identity
    • Sign the declaration that you will abide by the Archive’s Regulations.
  • You will be given a Reader’s Ticket, which you must present on request as evidence that you have agreed to our Regulations. If you do not have your Ticket with you, you will be required to furnish proof of identity
  • The books in the Library are available for reference only. Please remove no more than four books at once and hand them to the custodian to replace on the shelf.
  • Catalogued archive material is available by prior request. Depending on the amount requested, the custodian shall provide you with the material in small batches, which must be handed back before the next batch can be provided.
  • If you wish to inspect certain items you will be required to wear the white cotton gloves provided.
